In December I reported iPhone controls 46% of Japanese smartphone market | Asymco. Five months later Apple's share has reached 72%.
According the MM Research, 1.7 million iPhone were sold in the fiscal year ended March 31. That's not a huge number relative to the 110 million subscribers in the country. But Apple's exclusive carrier Softbank has only 22 million subscribers so Apple may have penetrated over 10% of that user base.

I can't get my head around why Symbian is always excluded in these studies... In the same time time horizon 12M Symbian smartphones were sold in Japan. Propaganda, I say :)

This research company seems to classify Symbian in Japan as a feature phone platform. I'm not surprised because so much of what Symbian is hired to do there is done by other "non-smart" platforms. Life's not fair.

Markus, Symbian was on about 80 million smartphones sold in the last 12 months. Now you're saying that 15 % of all Symbian phones went to Japan, even though Japan represents just 6 % of the worldwide phone market and likewise 6 % of the iPhone's sales? I must say this is suprising news to me. Can you offer a source?
