Asymconf is the Asymco experience. Live.

Attendees will be treated to an engaging, participatory experience. Using the case method, you will be guided through four probing questions pertinent in modern market analysis.

  1. What is disruption and how can it be harnessed? The case of mobile computing.
  2. What are the jobs that the entertainment industry is hired to do? The case of Hollywood.
  3. Is Wall Street more than good enough? The case of financial over-service.
  4. What are the limits of education? The case of learning and the theater.

If you would like to take part, please register your interest here.

    Ha Ha.

Charge $400/class and make passing 3 out of 4 classes a requirement for commenting on the blog.

Sounds very exciting. Good luck with the conference!

Is Wall Street more than good enough? The case of financial over-service.

What the heck is the starting point here? What is the point of this question its wording is so loose and vague.

Horace talks about "good enough" constantly on his Critical Path podcast w/r/t disruption.  Probably butchering nuances in how he'd explain, but essentially...

A product/service/solution that's "good enough" (for a given job that the market hires it to do) is ripe for disruption by new entrants.

"Ripe" is oversimplifying, as I believe "good enough" is a necessary but not sufficient condition for disruption.

p.s. A textbook example of "good enough" is Microsoft's Office suite - its feature set long ego satisfied the requirements of the job it is hired to do by most of its market.

So what relevance has the "more than" has to do with it? It's either good enough or not?

Or "The case of financial over-service" - what has that got to do with being good enough that seems to hint at over provision, over supply etc..

"Disruption" is just another phrase used to repackage and resell old ideas. Anyone who has read Schumpeters work would know this.

Look at this article from 2002. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.03/schumpeter.html

"Far less in vogue is his projection that entrepreneurs will disappear as innovation becomes mechanized in corporate labs"

Then read Horaces articles about Apples innovation process such as https://fnayeri-ulqtb.wpcomstaging.com/2011/11/21/is-innovation-valuable/ and you see its a rehash of what been done before but reading the comments you would think its a revelation. There is nothing new in this "disruption" theory its just a rehash.

I'm really jealous of how much free time you have. Where can I sign up for KankerotKonf?

  10. Horace Dediu ·

The starting point is a definition of the metric of performance of financial services.

Mid-April is busy earning report period.  Many will find it hard to go to Asymconf

Sounds good, I'll be in China then, so I can't go.

I keep thinking that a conference, the day after Apple's shareholder meeting would be ideal. Apple is holding their shareholder meeting on a Thursday, Feb. 23rd. Having a conference on the Friday after, would be perfect. I know your conference is more generic, but many of us here come thru the Apple connection. I mentioned this to Jason Schwarz for his conference as well. It would seem ideal to put a conference like his the day after.

Could you elaborate on number 4. What are the limits of education? The case of learning and the theater.

    Thanks

Each of these topics will have a blog post written in advance which will serve as a starting point of the discussion.

I'd be very interested in a conference in the San Francisco / Silicon Valley area.  I guess you could even do multiple days, depending on how large you want the groups to be.

  17. Mikej ·

What a shame, already have a booking that day....but hope it goes well, Mike

Quick one, the one page website of the conference doesn't mention Amsterdam, can it be updated? Thanks!

  19. Horace Dediu ·

It seems to be a bug. Thanks for pointing it out.

I think that education have no limits for any students. In my my opinion and some guys from https://paperell.com/ think in the same way, you need just study hard with all stuff. Cause only education can bring you into qulity man.
