How to read the MacBook Neo as bad news for the stock

Apple is doomed because product is too successful

A quick search on Apple’s website shows that Neos are sold out and won’t be available for in store pickup until the middle of April. Air and Pro models are available for in store pickup today.

investors might be concerned about margin pressures as the product that’s doing so well is so cheap

‘I view the recent launches of Mac products as a major success for Apple near-term and medium-term,’ Oppenheimer analyst Martin Yang said. “Neo may have slightly lower-than-average margin comparing to other Mac products, but I don’t think margin headwind is large enough to be notable on Apple’s consolidated income statement.”

NB: Money quote: "investors might be concerned about margin pressures as the product that’s doing so well is so cheap."…

… No good news goes unpunished. My assumption is that Apple will not have "slightly lower-than-average margin" on the MacBook Neo. First, because it is reusing a chipset that has gone down the cost curve and the production is fully depreciated. Second because components are feature-stripped and anything with a modicum of marginal cost is removed (e.g. touch ID, backlit keyboard). Third, high-volume manufacturing leverage. Apple knew pretty well how demand would scale and is buckled in for the ride. The assumption is false and demonstrates how no benefit of the doubt is afforded to the company, resulting in the usual opportunity for investors.

Let's remember this piece of claim chowder:

    https://www.makeuseof.com/please-dont-preorder-the-macbook-neo/

It won't sell out No need to preorder

Let's start with a softball. When the MacBook Neo comes out on March 11, you're going to be able to walk into an Apple Store and buy one. This isn't like an iPhone launch where you have to get your preorder in before any reviews are allowed to go live.

MacBook Neo reviews will go live, and the reviews will be positive. Reviewers will say that it's great for the "average user", a person that doesn't actually exist. It's a code for "I wouldn't spend my own money on this, but maybe you should."

Luckily, there will be reviews that show actual testing data. Look at that data that's published, make an informed purchasing decision.

There is absolutely no reason to preorder this product.

    He asks the wrong question.

It's about margin dollars, not margin percent. More so since the gap from Neo to Pro or Air MacBooks is enough to negate any cannibalization impact.

Margin dollar increases mean higher EPS growth.

PS: I agree no worry about margin percent anyway.

A notable breakthrough was recently achieved in the assembly line of the new MacBook Neo, where the engineering teams co-developed automatic screw-driving technology. This innovation eliminates the need for rivets entirely, streamlining the production process with 100 percent rivet-free craftsmanship. 19 March 2026, Xinhua article

Sabih Khan's itinerary covered key links from battery production to whole - unit assembly, and also relatively comprehensively presented the latest progress of the Chinese supply chain in intelligent manufacturing.

Inside Sunwoda's battery factory, the iPhone battery production line has completed multiple rounds of automation upgrades. Different from the long and noisy production lines in the traditional impression, the equipment layout here is more compact, the operation rhythm is faster, and the overall noise is significantly reduced. The main reason behind this is that Sunwoda has upgraded the traditional belt conveyor to a magnetic levitation production line, using electromagnetic force to move objects.

A person from Sunwoda told Jiemian News that this production line has gone through four iterations in the past decade. First, it moved from manual to automated, then saved a lot of space by introducing a turntable line. The third - generation introduced a one - dimensional magnetic levitation production line, and the latest fourth - generation is a six - dimensional magnetic levitation production line with high flexibility and high precision.

Currently, its one - dimensional magnetic levitation production line has been fully applied to the iPhone production line. The six - dimensional magnetic levitation production line, with its rich dimensions and higher adjustment freedom, can quickly deploy battery production programs based on different volumes and shapes. The time has been shortened from 2 hours to 6 minutes, a reduction of 95%. 17 March 2026 Jiemian news;Translation 36Kr

As a result, the abnormal handling time of on - site equipment has been shortened by 72%.
