On September 1st, Apple announced that 120 million iOS devices were sold to date.
We know that there were 59.6 million iPhones sold through June (from SEC filings)
We also know that 3.2 million iPads were sold.
If we assume about 8 million iPhones and 4 million iPads were sold during August and July, the total number of iPod touch sold is 45.2 million.
That is 37.7% of total units.
In April I wrote that 41% of all iOS units sold were iPod touch to date.
The expansion of iPhone distribution plus the addition of iPad as reduced the platform footprint for the iPod, but it's still a sizable chunk. More than one in three iOS units in use are non-cellular devices. As the iPad rolls that number could move toward 50%.

A simple sales ratio, that has worked well, is 2 iPod touchs for every 3 iPhones.

On April 8, Jobs announced that cumulative sales of iPhones and iPods touch reached 85 million units: 50 million iPhones and 35 million iPods touch. Apple sold 10 million more during the last 5 months, it agrees with your estimate of 4 to 5 million per quarter.

More than one in three iOS devices may be non-cellular - but every single one is connected, or at least CAN connect, using wifi. They're not locked away from the Internet, they're just not always online. (Can be worth noting.)

Adam, I like that the plural of iPod touch is iPods touch. Nice.

Adam and Kevin, would you say that one should refer to a Steve of iPods Touch? Or maybe an infinite loop of iPods?

Didn't the iPad just reach 2 million capacity, like 2-3 days before the Sept media even? At the end of the 2nd quarter they were selling at roughly 1 million per month, so your estimate of 4 million iPad for July, August is to optimistic. I'd put the iPads at 3 million.
Also, the iPhones sold trough July and August at 8 million in total, with all the supply and model limitations? That would put the total of iPhone sold at Q3 at over 12 million. Given the iPhone 3G sold - 6,8 mil and the 3GS - 7.3 mil for the same quarter, aren't you being too optimistic again? I'd put the iPhones at 6 million, giving the final iPod touch count at 49,2 million as of 1st of Sept.

Hey, grumbles! I think the use of a steve or an infinite loop is quite clever and appropriate to the iPod. Evolutionists, in discussing speciation, talk of the time needed for a new species to appear as a Darwin.

I am estimating that Q3 iPhones will come in above 12 million. iPads is a tough call. I might be high for the Aug, July time frame but I would not put too much stock in these production figures, especially the dates when they take effect. But thanks for challenging these figures.

FYI, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster has it at 43.59 million iPods touch sold through June 2010.

Thanks PED. Now if Gene would publish how he got to that number in a blog, we'd all be wiser.

Why is your last name hyphenated? Just wondering.

Seems to me that the market is missing a WiFi only Android device. Someone like Samsung should come out with a physical clone of the iPod Touch, just running Android. No need to carrier lock the device and there is a huge developer community creating applications for it.

Steve Jobs himself said [during the latest keynote] that [over] 230,000 iOS devices were activated each day, which means that there are 6.9 million iOS activations per month. That's like 6.9 million units being sold per month, and that means that the estimates made by blogs and websites are usually too high.
